What are lemurs?

Lemurs are primates native only to Madagascar and the nearby Comoros Islands. They are part of the group called prosimians, which are considered more primitive than monkeys and apes. With over 100 species, they display a remarkable variety of sizes, behaviors, and appearances. From the tiny mouse lemur to the large indri, lemurs play an important role in maintaining Madagascar’s ecosystems.

Where do lemurs live?

Lemurs are found exclusively in Madagascar’s forests, from lush rainforests to dry spiny deserts. Each species has adapted to its specific environment, which determines its diet and behavior. Because they are restricted to this island, their survival depends heavily on the preservation of Madagascar’s unique and fragile ecosystems. Deforestation and land conversion are major threats to their natural habitats.

What do lemurs eat?

Most lemurs are omnivores, eating fruit, leaves, flowers, nectar, and occasionally insects. The exact diet varies by species, with some specializing in fruit while others consume more foliage. Their role as seed dispersers is vital to the regeneration of Madagascar’s forests, as many plants rely on lemurs to spread their seeds across large areas.
