Plato is often remembered as the author of The Republic and the student of Socrates, but his life contained dimensions that many overlook. Born around 427 B.C. into an aristocratic Athenian family, Plato was expected to pursue politics. Instead, the trial and execution of Socrates profoundly altered his path, convincing him that true justice could not be found in the volatile politics of Athens.

Few realize that Plato was also a traveler. After Socrates’ death, he journeyed extensively across the Mediterranean, visiting Egypt and Southern Italy, where he encountered mathematics, mysticism, and political systems that shaped his philosophy. His attempt to apply his ideas in practice was less successful: he became entangled in the politics of Syracuse, trying—and failing—to mold a tyrant into a philosopher-king.

Plato was not only a philosopher but also an innovator in education. He founded the Academy in Athens, often considered the first university in the Western world. For nearly a millennium, the Academy trained thinkers who influenced everything from science to ethics.
